The items and services that bug me on a day to day basis are displayed below on my "bug list". I will then proceed to explain why this "bug" occurs.
1) The lack of open parking spaces for scooters/motorcycles on campus at the University of Florida during Fall and Spring within peak hours (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.).
Why: The scooter is common at the University of Florida and the growing student body leads to more scooters, but the amount of space available stays the same.
2) If I am cooking beef, it is a frustrating process to drain the fat from the skillet without losing the cooked beef; I end up losing some meat and fat/oils run on the side of the skillet.
Why: The way that the skillets are shaped do not make draining meat an easy process; the ground beef is cooked into small pieces and are hard to keep from falling out.
3) When driving Monday through Friday between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Gainesville, the traffic is bumper to bumper; when trying to turn left onto SW 20th ave from SW 43rd st., it is difficult to get more than two cars through the light before the rotation ends.
Why: Commuters do not understand the simple concept of not blocking an intersection; thus, they block the traffic desiring to turn left onto the road. By the time the intersection is somewhat clear, the light rotation has changed.
4) When at Starbucks, the air conditioning is always at a low temperature regardless of the temperature outside.
Why: They keep the temperature low in order to appeal to all customers; jackets can be put on. If too warm for some, there are not many clothing items that one can take off in public.
5) There are not any ice skating rinks in Gainesville; the nearest one is over an hour away in Jacksonville.
Why: Ice skating and ice hockey are not very popular in the south due to the lack of winter sports in Florida. Ice skates are not typically footwear in a state where it never snows and temperatures rarely hit freezing.
6) During the weekend, my regular physician is closed; this causes me to pay a fee on top of my insurance to go to the Minute Clinic in CVS.
Why: The doctor's office is closed on weekends because there are typically only one or two physicians there that appreciate having weekends off and not an endless amount of work.
7) My personal alarm clock wakes me up every morning at 8 a.m., but the snooze button is too easily accessible. It causes me to stay in bed.
Why: I am too cheap to buy an alarm clock rug where I would have to physically get out of bed to turn it off.
8) My cat scratches at the carpet in order to cover her food. She is pulling the rug and ruining the carpet by doing so.
Why: It is an instinct of hers to cover her food, but the bowl is placed on carpet; the combination of nails and carpet do not go together well.
9) I cannot disclose my work location, but I can say that I work retail. It is frustrating when coworkers put items on the wrong hanger; in explanation, they put a small shirt on a hanger labeled as medium.
Why: The emphasis on great customer service does not always include hanging presentation. There are no reprimands in place for this carelessness.
10) My upstairs neighbors in a Gainesville apartment complex are quite noisy.
Why: They are ignorant to the people below them and like to throw parties every weekend. Also, the insulation between floors is either little or nonexistent.
11) When I buy the fried chicken from Publix, there always tends to be little hairs sticking out of the fried part. It prevents me from eating it and is then a waste of money.
Why: It might be the type of batter that Publix fries their chicken in.
12) It really bugs me when I walk through Turlington Plaza at the University of Florida and I bombarded with organizations and pressured to listen to them.
Why: Turlington Plaza is a high traffic area on campus and statistically speaking, it is the best location to spread out the word on an organization.
13) It bothers me that Publix sells the cut up watermelon at a ridiculously expensive price.
Why: They do this because it considered a service to customers and to take advantage of
14) The AT&T store does not allow someone to buy a new Go Phone to replace their old one on their contract if he or she is not a cosigner.
Why: This phone company is very protective of their customers and want to avoid external phone theft.
15) My apartment is extremely warm and the ceiling fan barely helps.
Why: The air conditioning is at a warm 76 degrees F because the utilities bills is too expensive. This is due to poor insulation in Florida buildings.
16) The items in the 'Only in Rhode Island' store in the T. F. Green Airport (Warwick, RI) are overpriced.
Why: As a store within an airport, items are overpriced in order to take the money from tourists before they leave to go home.
17) The fire alarm in my apartment goes off if the oven is at 400 degrees F or the toaster is being used unless the fan is on.
Why: Although it has been replaced, the fire alarm is overly sensitive.
18) The RollerCoaster Tycoon game on my computer does not work anymore; I purchased a year ago and after a computer update, it would not open anymore.
Why: My computer is no longer compatible with the game mentioned.
19) After being frozen, Uncrustables are directed to be put in the fridge to defrost for half of an hour. It is still partially frozen after this waiting period.
Why: The estimated wait time depends on the temperature of the fridge and the company did not take this into consideration when printing the package.
20) At my apartment, we have Pavlov media for cable. It tends to eliminate channels at its choosing and some stations are low quality as if playing a scratched DVD.
Why: The cable company is free to residents; thus, the quality is not put into consideration. A possibility is that Pavlov media has a low quality satellite.
Reflection:
I was previously warned that this bug list would be extremely difficult. Not surprisingly, this list was a challenge to create. I am nowhere close to being an optimistic, but I do not tend to single out the things that bug me either everyday or once in a while. Although it is a negative way of viewing the world, I intend to start looking at the world as a large bug list that needs improvements.

Kristine, I have to say that it would seem your list had a familiar ring surrounding traffic in and out of school as well as parking for scooters. Specifically with the scooters it reminds me of the Netherlands and Paris where it is no longer the car versus the bike, but that we have to share the road and realize there is a place for them and changes need to be made. The more students use scooters, school officials will see that and make a change. Probably will not come as fast as you would like, but a change will be made to accommodate the parking because of the need.
ReplyDeleteIt is funny you pointed out that you are nowhere close to being an optimist but you do not tend to single out the things that bug you. In my post I had the same difficulty but that is because I am considered an optimist and would rather see the good than the bad. I think we had the same rule of thought in that it is a negative way of viewing the world. I like the way you turned it around and wanted to see opportunities of improvements rather than impositions.
Here is my link to my blog and hopefully you can find some opportunities within my list.

Hi Kristine! I really liked reading your bug list. I especially liked the entries that related to UF, since I could relate to those as well! Parking on campus is a logistical nightmare- UF should definitely make some more parking areas! And if there was an ice skating rink in Gainesville (I can't believe there isn't one), I would make good use of it. If you have some spare time, feel free to take a look at my bug list here: http://biancamarques23.blogspot.com/2016/01/the-bug-list-things-that-tick-me-off.html. Maybe we have some things in common :)
