2) I understand that the United States is a market economy, but I am still confused about the actual role that government plays in the market in relation to profitability.
3) I would ask the author: Can you be more clear about the government's role in profitability? This is because the short passage was confusing to me. I would also ask: In some industries, do some competing forces outweigh others dramatically? I am curious on how dramatic a competing force can change.
4) I do not disagree with the author in any points. He or she does not seem to be heavily opinionated in the writing.
